Japan Supports Education in Lango

The education sector of Lango sub region has received a donation from the Embassy of Japan in Uganda.  The project of 97,435 US Dollars (about 224 million Uganda shillings) was signed between the Embassy of Japan and Akwete Primary School in Alebtong district.

In Akwete primary school, the existing classrooms had become too dilapidated as a result of the LRA insurgency. The return of internally displaced person’s increased the number of pupils causing a lot of congestion in the already dilapidated classes. The new 4 classroom blocks constructed through this project will provide more space to better serve delivery for the benefit of over 900 children.

Junji Yamazaki, the Deputy Head of Mission of Japan to Uganda, officiated the handover that took place at the school.

“With peace returned to the region, we deem education as an important basis for early reconstruction and development of the region,” he said. He further noted that Japan would continue to support improving the education and other sectors in Uganda.

The donation by Japan this time is part of the GGP scheme administered by the Japanese Embassy to support community development projects to uplift the life of grassroots people. So far, 166 projects have been funded under the scheme in Uganda since its inception in Uganda in 1992.

Japan is committed to promoting African development through Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD) process with mutual ownership and partnership, working hand in hand for the peace and prosperity in Uganda and Africa. TICAD was launched in 1993 and has since been held every five years, and the TICAD V conference was held in June this year at Yokohama celebrating the 20th anniversary of the initiative.
